The One Show You MUST Watch This Month

January 04, 2016

There is certainly no shortage of amazing things to watch on Netflix. If you haven’t checked out Aziz Ansari’s new show “Master of None” then you absolutely should because it’s hilarious and insightful. But the one show that seems to be on everybody’s mind lately is called “Making a Murderer.” If you liked the podcast “Serial” then “Making a Murderer” will be right up your alley. It’s a true crime documentary following Steven Avery, who lives in small-town Wisconsin and served 18 years for a crime he was later found not to have committed. Shortly after he was finally freed from prison, Avery ends up in jail again; this time for murder.

The documentary is riveting. As Avery argues that he was framed by the very police who wrongfully convicted him the first time, you follow the court proceedings, hear about the evidence, and go back and forth about the man’s innocence. If you’re in the market for something new and highly binge-worthy, this is absolutely it.

If You Want to Look Great For Your Holiday Parties But Don’t Want to Spend a Small Fortune

December 16, 2015

Holiday parties are in full swing and New Year’s Eve is right around the corner. This is a fun, festive, and exciting time of year, of course. Unfortunately, it’s also the time of year when you’re a little afraid to check your bank account. If you want to look great for your various holiday festivities but don’t exactly have hundreds to shell out on a new dress for each event, you need to check out Rent the Runway.

If you haven’t heard of it, Rent the Runway is a site that lets you borrow designer dresses for a fraction of the price. Wear the dress for your event, then put it back into its neat little bag, attach the pre-made UPS sticker, drop it in a UPS dropbox, and you’re on your merry way. They handle dry cleaning for you.

I was amazed by the concept (and also a little skeptical) but I decided to give it a shot for my friend’s holiday party. I was sick of the same three dresses I always wear, but also was not in the market to spend $200 on something new. I rented a Nicole Miller dress that retails for nearly $400 for just $60 bucks. It fit perfectly and helped to breathe new life into my wardrobe. This is what it looked like:

As an added bonus, RTR lets you order two sizes, which is perfect if you’re not totally sure which size you’d need. There are also plenty of detailed reviews about each dress, so you can get a sense of which size would fit best based on what other users have opted for in the past. It was such an easy experience, I can’t believe I hadn’t thought to try it before. I’d definitely recommend it for holiday parties or New Year’s Eve, plus it’s something to keep in mind when wedding season rolls around again!

The 10 Best Things to Do with $100

November 01, 2015

In case you missed it, Mix 102.5 is giving you a chance at being a bit richer. All you have to do is keep listening to us! It’s part of the “Song of the Day” contest. Every day in the month of November, you’ll have a chance to win cash. Monday-Thursday is worth $100 and then on Friday it’s $500. Yep, you read that right. When you hear that day’s song, be caller #10 and the money is yours. Sound like a good deal? We thought so. Here’s the official Song of the Day calendar so you know what to listen for.

This brings us to our next point: what are you going to do with that money? We’ve got some ideas:

Pay off some debt

Got a credit card bill that’s looming? Some extra money will put a nice dent in that.

Put it into a college fund

The kids’ college fund is a great spot for some money. Textbooks aren’t cheap, you know!

Take your family out to a nice dinner

That means no phones/iPads/other gadgets at the table. Get everyone to enjoy some much-needed catchup time together. Hey, order dessert too.

Make some minor home repairs

It’s finally time to repaint that room that’s desperately in need, or update those kitchen fixtures that are way outdated.

Invest in your career

Is there a course you can take that will allow you to go further in your career? Some extra cash makes it possible to pay for it. Plus, this type of purchase is definitely a worthwhile investment.

Give to someone in need

Pick your favorite charity, then donate part or all of your winnings to that group.

Stock up on winter clothes

Those jackets that feel like sleeping bags are highly necessary, but certainly not cheap.

Buy an outfit you feel great in

Giving a nerve-wracking presentation in front of your boss just feels easier when you’ve got an outfit that you know fits you perfectly.

Go see your favorite band

Nothing beats live music, and seeing your band in concert is totally worth the ticket price.

Save it!

Crazy things happen. It’s always good to have some extra cash stored away, just in case.
